LMS Algorithm Implementation Steps:
1. Variable and Parameter Definition:
- X(n): Input vector, also referred to as training samples in adaptive filtering context
- W(n): Weight vector representing beamformer coefficients that require optimization
- b(n): Bias term for system offset adjustment (typically incorporated into weight vector in practical implementations)
- d(n): Desired output signal representing target beam pattern response
- y(n): Actual output calculated through linear combination y(n) = W^T(n)X(n) + b(n)
- η: Learning rate parameter controlling convergence speed and stability (usually set between 0 < η < 1/λ_max where λ_max is maximum eigenvalue of input covariance matrix)
- n: Iteration counter for tracking adaptive process
2. Initialization: Assign small random non-zero values to weight vector W(0) to break symmetry, set iteration counter n=0. In code implementation, this typically uses random number generation with small amplitude.
3. For each input sample set x(n) and corresponding desired output d(n), perform the following computations:
- Error calculation: e(n) = d(n) - X^T(n)W(n) [Computes difference between desired and actual output]
- Weight update: W(n+1) = W(n) + ηX(n)e(n) [Gradient descent update rule that minimizes mean square error]
4. Convergence check: Verify if stopping criteria are met (e.g., error threshold ||e(n)|| < ε or maximum iterations reached).
