Genetic Algorithm (GA) is an optimization method inspired by biological evolution, which progressively improves candidate solutions through operations such as selection, crossover, and mutation. Another common application is resource allocation problems, such as task scheduling where the goal is to minimize both completion time and resource consumption. In code, this often involves defining objective functions that calculate these metrics and using archive mechanisms to store non-dominated solutions.
The strength of multi-objective genetic algorithms lies in their parallel search capability, providing multiple feasible solutions at once rather than a single optimal solution. However, algorithm performance heavily depends on parameter settings (e.g., population size, crossover rate, mutation rate) and may incur high computational costs, especially as the number of objectives increases. Effective implementation often requires careful tuning of these parameters and potentially incorporating elitism to preserve high-quality solutions across generations.
