Implementing simple image feature point extraction and matching using MATLAB code. Initially, we can utilize functions from the Image Processing Toolbox to read images and convert them to grayscale format using imread() and rgb2gray() functions. Subsequently, feature detection algorithms such as SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform), SURF (Speeded-Up Robust Features), or ORB (Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF) can be employed to identify keypoints in the images. MATLAB's Computer Vision Toolbox provides detectSURFFeatures(), detectORBFeatures(), or similar functions for this purpose, which implement scale-space extrema detection and orientation assignment algorithms.

Following feature detection, we compute descriptors for each keypoint using methods like extractFeatures(), which generates distinctive feature vectors based on local image gradients or binary patterns. These descriptors enable robust matching by encoding distinctive characteristics of each keypoint's neighborhood. For descriptor extraction, algorithms typically involve histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) for SIFT/SURF or binary tests for ORB.

Finally, matching algorithms such as distance-based matching (using Euclidean distance with matchFeatures() function) or geometric constraint-based matching (employing RANSAC algorithm for outlier rejection) are applied to find corresponding point pairs between images. The matching process typically involves nearest neighbor search with thresholding or ratio tests to ensure reliability.
