Backpropagation (BP) neural network is a supervised learning algorithm for neural networks composed of an input layer, one or more hidden layers (middle layers), and an output layer. Each neuron in adjacent layers is fully connected, while neurons within the same layer have no connections between them. The network learns using teacher-guided training. When a pair of learning patterns is provided to the network, each neuron receives input responses and generates connection weights. Then, starting from the output layer, the algorithm adjusts the connection weights layer by layer in the direction that reduces the error between the desired output and actual output, propagating back to the input layer. This process repeats iteratively until the global network error approaches a specified minimum value, completing the learning process. In MATLAB implementation, this typically involves using functions like `feedforwardnet` or `patternnet` for network creation, `train` for training with backpropagation, and configuring parameters such as learning rate and number of hidden neurons.
This chapter primarily utilizes BP neural networks for research on PID parameter tuning and digital recognition technology. For PID parameter tuning, we investigate how BP neural networks can optimize PID controller parameters (proportional, integral, derivative gains) to enhance control system performance. This can be implemented in MATLAB using Control System Toolbox functions alongside neural network training, where the BP network learns to adjust PID parameters based on system response data. For digital recognition technology, we apply BP neural networks to train models for accurate digit identification, typically using image preprocessing techniques and the neural network toolbox for pattern recognition tasks. Through these applications, we can better understand and implement BP neural network algorithms in practical engineering scenarios.
