The Recursive Least Squares (RLS) algorithm is an efficient method for adaptive filtering and system parameter estimation. Unlike traditional least squares methods that require processing complete datasets, RLS achieves real-time parameter adjustment through recursive updates, making it particularly suitable for online identification of time-varying systems.
The algorithm's core lies in maintaining a continuously updated covariance matrix, performing three key operations when new data arrives: first calculating the innovation (prediction error), then adjusting parameter update direction through the gain vector, and finally synchronously updating the covariance matrix. This recursive structure avoids matrix inversion operations, significantly reducing computational complexity. In code implementation, this typically involves initializing the covariance matrix as a diagonal matrix and updating it iteratively using rank-1 updates.
In system simulations, RLS demonstrates two major advantages: first, rapid tracking capability for non-stationary signals, where the forgetting factor can flexibly adjust the algorithm's memory of historical data; second, exponential convergence speed for parameter estimation, which is particularly important in real-time control systems. Typical application scenarios include communication channel equalization, active noise control, and financial time series prediction. When implementing RLS in code, the forgetting factor is usually set between 0.95 and 1.0 to balance tracking speed and stability.
Simulation experiments show that under the same signal-to-noise ratio conditions, RLS achieves lower steady-state error and faster convergence speed compared to LMS algorithms, though this requires careful consideration of its higher computational load. The algorithm's performance heavily depends on the selection of the forgetting factor and initial covariance matrix, parameters that require debugging and optimization based on specific application scenarios. Code implementations often include parameter tuning mechanisms to adapt to different operational environments.
